Shower instead of a bathtub – smart solution with a Plug & Play system from wedi

Bathroom renovation Marriott Hotel Copenhagen

Whether you are travelling on business or on holiday, if you stay at the Mariott Hotel in downtown Copenhagen, you are guaranteed relaxing moments in a luxurious ambience. The complete modernisation of bathrooms in this 5-star hotel contributes to the overall experience. The world’s leading hotel chain entrusted the bathroom and wet room specialist wedi with the renovation work and thanks to tried-and-tested wedi system solutions, guests can now enjoy invigorating showers instead of taking a bath.

122 of the 406 bathrooms have already been renovated in this idyllic waterfront hotel and many more are already in the planning stage. Not an easy task to say the least, especially because the hotel must remain operational during the entire renovation. The clients Bella Group Development and ATP-Ejendomme, together with the Copenhagen architectural firm Urban Agency, were looking for a solution that not only fulfilled the highest standards in terms of design and quality, but could also be installed quickly and safely without requiring much coordination between trades on site. Thanks to key advantages such as the components being prefabricated during manufacturing according to individual specifications, they chose wedi’s clever plug-and-play solutions.

Low construction height – Fundo Integro

The transformation of the bathtubs into low-threshold showers formed the central part of the project, whilst the biggest technical challenge was the implementation of the drainage as desired by the customer. The bathroom and wet room specialist wedi took on the challenge and made the customer's request possible in a smart way. A custom-made version of the Fundo Integro shower element has been developed especially for the Marriott Hotel; both the point and the linear drainage was integrated into the shower element whist keeping the total installation height at an incredible 90 mm.

The wedi Fundo Integro includes a standard-compliant DN50 drainage within the element and is available in almost any desired format. This is precisely what makes the system perfect for such complex refurbishment projects. Completing the installation, the interlocking walls of the shower enclosures were also specially designed for the Copenhagen Marriott Hotel project.

Save time with the wedi system

The ready-to-install Fundo Top surfaces from wedi ensure the luxurious look of the new wellness showers; instead of tiles underfoot, the clients opted for large format, tailor-made design surfaces in "flake white". Thanks to their shapes and slopes being coordinated with one other, the Fundo Top simply needed to be bonded to the Fundo shower element. Top design surfaces however made not only the cladding of floors but also the cladding of walls simple and safe. Overall, this meant significantly less noise and dirt during construction.

wedi's intelligent system concept, with everything pre-fabricated in the factory to precisely fit together on site, eliminated the need for complex installations and time-consuming grouting and hence saved a lot of time.

The best of all: seamless design surfaces from wedi

Top design surfaces are anti-slip and also waterproof in the overall wedi system. Exclusive and inviting, their groutless appearance transforms both the floor and the wall areas into a visual delight; the interplay of light and the flakes within the material create reflections that highlight the fluidity of water conveying a serene, contemporary look. The thoughtful design marries form and function into a seamless and invigorating shower experience, so no wonder why the new bathrooms at the Copenhagen Marriott Hotel attract the attention of international guests.

Satisfaction of all parties involved

The first 122 baths over three floors (9 to 11) were completed after 5 months of construction in April 2024. This was not least due to the efficient interaction of all those involved. Here at wedi, everyone is proud of the fact that the largest hotel project in the company's history went so smoothly. "wedi has been selected because the products perfectly combine design and technology, and both the architects and the clients have trusted us with this challenging project" - says Lasse Ervolder, wedi Area Manager Scandinavia. - "Our local team on site and the wedi technology and production in Germany have done a first-class job. Together, we have overcome all challenges and I'm looking forward to the next stage of this project!"
